En 1978, Michael joue le rôle de l'épouvantail dans un remake du magicien d'Oz intitulé "The Wiz". Il sera accompagné de Diana Ross. C'est sur le tournage, qu'il y rencontre Quincy Jones et qu'une amitié va naître entre les 2 hommes. Quincy Jones produira l'album "Off The Wall" ainsi que plus tard "Thriller" et "Bad".
